Alone_Together – an electronic music project for young music makers.

We’re looking for music makers aged 13-18 to take part in Alone_Together – a 10 week series of workshops exploring exciting new ways of creating music using electronics, digital technologies and instrument/vocal samples. Experiment and collaborate with other young creatives to make an original soundscape around the theme of Alone_Together:

What happens when musicians with different experiences and ideas work together as a collective? How can we use separate samples of music to create a whole track? What is the sound of Alone_Together?

The final piece will be recorded to form part of an exhibition at the Horsfall building in Manchester. You’ll also get a chance to perform the piece twice – at a Brighter Sound live night at the end of the summer term and at a special event in September.

This is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians, producers, singers, instrumentalists – or anyone who is curious about collaborating, experimenting and exploring digital technologies to create new music. Sessions will be led by professional sound artist Vicky Clarke and composer and sound designer MJ Mizra.

What’s involved

You will collaborate with other musicians to create a ‘soundscape’ that responds to the theme of Alone_Together. Across weekly sessions you will:

  • Use Ableton to write and record new music
  • Use coding to compose
  • Create sound packs using portable recorders
  • Create and compose with your own samples and found sounds
  • Record live instruments and vocals using Ableton
  • Experiment with electronic sound effects
  • Develop performance skills
