Anna Meredith Residency: Day 3

In the penultimate day of Anna Meredith’s residency we’ve seen (and heard) some amazing experimental pieces start to take shape…

To begin with, participants took part in a body percussion warm up similar to Anna’s previous HandsFree composition, incorporating choral work as well. After this, Ellie led an observational drawing warm up, getting the young musicians to draw portraits of one another in small time frames. As all this was going on Speth took her sound engineers off to familiarise them with a mixing desk.

Participants then split off into the same small groups they were working in yesterday, continuing to experiment with different techniques to refine their creations. After an hour or so of some great sound from the assortment of different musicians, they all went off to focus on their individual pieces. Anna’s group began to create a piece of music in response to the charcoal frieze the visual artists created yesterday, using different pieces of music as inspiration for their own creation. Meanwhile Ellie’s group started to map out the different styles of visual art each participant wanted to explore.

Here’s a few more shots from this fantastic residency…
