We’re looking for young people from Greater Manchester with a love of singing to join the BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy and perform at this year’s BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
No previous experience required – this is a fantastic free opportunity from the BBC Proms and Brighter Sound, for people from all musical backgrounds to develop their voice, explore classical choral singing and work alongside professional classical singers. As part of the project you’ll also perform at the world’s greatest classical music festival, the BBC Proms.
Who is it for
This opportunity is for 16-25 year olds from Greater Manchester.
To take part you should have:
- A love of singing
- A voice with potential
- Enthusiasm and willingness to learn and develop in a choral setting, as part of a team
- Commitment to the rehearsal schedule, and to looking at and listening to the piece at home in between rehearsals
- Or perhaps you are a good musician, composer or play another instrument, and you’ve not yet explored your voice!
We especially encourage you to apply if you have little or no experience of singing in a group. You might not have sung in a choir before or not for some time, or perhaps you enjoy singing in a group that doesn’t require you to read music.
As part of the Academy you’ll take part in regular rehearsals led by conductor Grace Rossiter and members of the BBC Singers (the BBC’s full-time professional choir).
In a supportive and friendly environment you’ll start from the basics of classical choral singing and work together in preparation for the Proms Youth Choir performance at the BBC Proms 2019.
Singers will be taught the music to best suit them (by ear and using scores), and we will provide audio tools for you to practice your part at home.
You don’t need to be able to read music to be part of the Academy, but you should have a love of singing and a voice with potential.
“The best thing about the experience was how it was open to everyone, regardless of musical experience. I had the chance to meet and sing alongside people from a range of musical backgrounds, and to sing in one of the most prestigious classical music venues despite never having any formal singing training before!” – Proms Youth Choir Academy 2017 member
Rehearsals will take place at MediaCityUK, Salford and Hallé at St Michael’s in central Manchester on the dates listed below. The Proms Youth Choir residency, where the Academy will join other participating choirs will take place at Chetham’s School of Music and at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

How to apply
Please download and complete an application form and send to firstname.lastname@example.org by 10am, Wednesday 27 March.
Applications are open to 16-25 year olds. If applicants are 15 but turn 16 by 30 June 2019 they are eligible to apply.
Selected applicants will be invited to a free workshop and selection day on 7 April at MediaCityUK in Salford. The day will offer you the chance to meet the team and each other and have a go at singing as a group in a fun, relaxed and friendly setting.
Throughout the day we’ll be looking for people who we think are ideally suited to the Academy and will be selecting up to 50 singers to join. The aim of the day will be to offer everyone a fun introduction to choral singing, regardless of whether you are then offered a place in the Academy. We will then be in touch with you to let you know if you have been offered a place by Friday 12 April.
It’s free of charge to take part in the Academy. For singers requiring financial assistance, the BBC Proms will cover the cost of reasonable travel expenses for singers to attend rehearsals and the residency in Manchester. Travel to and from London and London accommodation will be provided for all singers. If you need further financial assistance to take part in the Academy, please contact Tim Chatterton at email@example.com.
If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Tim Chatterton from Brighter Sound at firstname.lastname@example.org or 0161 830 3974.

About the BBC Proms Youth Choir
The BBC Proms Youth Choir began in 2012, and offers young singers the opportunity to perform at the world’s greatest classical music festival, the BBC Proms, while developing their choral skills during a four-day residency led by choral director Simon Halsey.
About the BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy
The BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy aims to find undiscovered voices from all musical backgrounds and develop them in a choral setting. The Academy offers young singers the chance to develop their voice, explore classical choral singing and work alongside professional classical singers. In 2017, the BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy took place in London, with singers rehearsing regularly in the lead up to their performance at the First Night of the Proms. You can find out more about the 2017 Academy group by visiting our website or watching a short film here.
Last year, the Academy took place in the North East of England, with singers rehearsing regularly at Sage Gateshead before taking part in the Proms Youth Choir performance of at the Proms on 21 July 2018. Since then, members of the 2018 Academy group have formed their own choir and are still singing together and performing regularly. In March 2019 they will also be performing live on BBC Radio 3 as part of Radio 3’s Free Thinking weekend.
In 2019 the BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy will be run in Greater Manchester in partnership with Brighter Sound.
