Florence Rutherfoord is currently writing, singing and playing electric violin in the folk punk band WATERSIDE, who she’s touring with during February. WATERSIDE formed at Leeds College of Music, where Florence is studying classical and jazz violin. She was introduced to the violin through folk music, so her playing and writing is very influenced by the melodies and storytelling of folk songs. Watching folk artists like Seth Lakeman is what inspired Florence to accompany herself with the violin and now she uses pedals with the violin to create synth-like textures.
I admire the songwriting and arranging of Beth Orton, especially the way that she combines acoustic instruments and electronics, so I was really excited by the idea of having the opportunity to work with her. I’m hoping to learn some arranging ideas from Beth, particularly when using electronic sounds in your music. I’m looking forward to working with female artists as it will be really inspiring to get to know some other talented women.
