Event Highlight

  • This event has passed.

Brighter Sound is delighted to welcome award-winning singer Tanya Tagaq to Manchester this September to lead a one-off pre-performance masterclass at Band on the Wall. We’re offering female musicians aged 11-24 the opportunity to take part in a masterclass with a singer who has reinvented the traditions of Inuit throat singing.

Part of our Here Come the Grrrls season of women in music, Tanya’s vocal masterclass is free and open to all female musicians aged 11-24.  The evening performance offers the chance to see Tanya perform songs from her award-winning album Animism and will be open to the general public.  Book here for Tanya’s performance.

Here Come the Grrrls is an exciting free programme of residencies, masterclasses, courses, debates and discussions designed to celebrate, profile and inspire female musicians. It is our positive response to low levels of female participation that is mirrored by the gender gap in the music industry.

“the polar punk who makes Björk sound tame” – Homa Khaleeli, The Guardian

Tanya Tagaq is an award-winning Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artist. She is possibly the only solo female artist to successfully take the indigenous female tradition of Inuit throat singing, and reinvent it using innovative contemporary vocal techniques.

She has collaborated with a number of acclaimed musicians including Björk, the Kronus Quartet and Mike Patton, and has earned widespread critical acclaim for her album Animism, including winner of the Polaris Music Prize 2014 (Canada’s Mercury Prize equivalent), Aboriginal Album of the Year (Juno Awards, 2015) and “Pushing the Boundaries Award 2014” (Canadian Folk Music Awards).

Tanya is a truly unique artist who has become successful on her own terms, without compromise. She is a powerful advocate for her native culture, creativity and modern femininity.

Watch Tanya singing on YouTube, listen on SoundCloud and follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

“Tagaq projects sounds that carry the imprint of the body’s secret contours and recesses, delving far beyond personal utterance, out beyond human identity, to summon voices from the flesh cavity haunts of animal spirits and primal energies” – The Wire

This is a fantastic opportunity for all singers to experience an exciting and unusual vocal masterclass with an international award-winning artist. The masterclass with Tanya will take place before a public performance at Band on the Wall. Free tickets to Tanya’s performance can be booked here.
