Event Highlight

  • This event has passed.

Brighter Sound presents Jazz Foundations with saxophone legend Munch Manship. Play specially arranged classic Jazz repertoire and work on solo 'chops' in a ten week programme of weekly sessions including a performance at Band on the Wall.

We now offer TWO Thursday Jazz Foundations sessions, these are:

  1. Beginners: 6.15-7.45pm
  2. Intermediate / Advanced: 8-9.30pm

Under the direction of saxophone legend Munch Manship Band on the Wall's long running and popular jazz group continues it's exploration of the jazz repertoire for another ten sessions plus a full evening performance on Sun 6 Dec 2015 at Band on the Wall.

"Playing with a group of musicians has improved my timing and counting and the course also improved my use of mode scales and chord structure for improvisations."

Jazz Foundations offers a chance to blow through and rehearse new arrangements of great compositions in a mixture of jazz styles from Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman to Tom Harrell, Stan Kenton and Benny Carter. Our specially devised and arranged charts are adapted to suit any instrumentation and offer solo opportunities for all the group. Sessions take place in a friendly and supportive atmosphere in the Education Room above the Main Venue at Band on the Wall. New members welcome, all ages* and instruments. Some reading skills are necessary for horn players and keyboards and would be useful (but not essential) for bass, guitar and drums.

"The course is an enjoyable learning experience where musicians who enjoy jazz come together to learn and practice the skills needed to improve their playing."

Please note that we provide a drum kit, a keyboard and a vocal mic with small PA. Rhythm section players (bass, drums, keys) may be required to play alternate numbers if the group has more than one of each subscribed.

Beginners are players who have little or no experience of playing jazz styles or improvisation and want to build confidence and learn basic chart reading and ensemble skills.

Intermediate / Advanced players are those who have been playing jazz for more than two years, are confident readers and have reached a moderate standard of playing.

"...very relaxed, so nobody should have any fears or inhibitions if they are not yet a highly accomplished musician."

If you are unsure which class you should be in, sign up for one and we can switch where necessary.

This is a ten week course of rehearsals plus a performance.
