MyHub presents “My Music, My Manchester”, the premiere performance of a Manchester ‘song cycle’ featuring internationally renowned musician and cultural activist Meklit.
This October half term MyHub will bring together Manchester’s music organisations and 35 talented young musicians aged 13 – 18 in a large-scale project that explores the city’s rich and diverse musical culture.
Recruited from diverse musical backgrounds, the participants will undertake an intensive week-long creative residency from 25 – 30 October led by trailblazer and cultural activist Meklit and supported by professional musicians from Hub partners including Brighter Sound, Manchester Camerata, Music Action International, Z-Arts, One Education, RNCM and the BBC Philharmonic orchestra. The young people will work in four groups at Band on the Wall music venue, each group composing new music that references a different musical genre and explores – and gives voice to – their city.
“It’s not just about people that came before you, though of course that is part of the story. But a city can be an influence, a work of visual art, a state of mind…” – Meklit
The showcase event will take place on Sunday 30 October, 3pm at BBC Philharmonic Studio, MediaCityUK, M50 2HQ in a celebration of Manchester music, with performances of original music, digital projections and a documentary film curated by Video Jam.
This is a free, drop-in public event.
