About Brighter Sound
Brighter Sound is a pioneering music charity based in central Manchester.
Our work paves the way for the music makers of the future, re-balancing the music landscape so that diversity and creativity can flourish and be celebrated.
Rooted in the North of England with national and international reach, we’ve delivered a programme of exciting, relevant, creative projects and events to support young and emerging musicians for 19 years, working with music makers from their early years to their early careers.
We’ve connected our participants with inspirational artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Beth Orton, Nadine Shah, Everything Everything, Anna Meredith, Imogen Heap, Bugzy Malone and Snarky Puppy. We also deliver a broad programme of grass-roots music making opportunities for children and young people, supporting inclusive music making as the regional strategic partner for Youth Music.
We are passionate about the political and social relevance of our work, leading and connecting to a wide range of steering groups and research projects across our specialisms.
Our company consists of 11 core staff, a network of freelance producers, musicians, workshop leaders, and a wide range of partners. We champion an approach that is collaborative, responsive, accessible and high quality, working in a supportive, fast-paced and creative environment.
Our thriving programme is constantly growing. Recent commissions include The Hexagon Experiment (Great Exhibition of the North 2018) and Manchester Hill Remembered (in partnership with Manchester City Council and Manchester Histories). This work complements our core programme of support for young and emerging musicians which includes Both Sides Now – our ground-breaking initiative to support gender equality in music.
