Our first Sing City Live showcase of 2017 celebrates the return of our weekly songwriting sessions for under 18’s. 

There is a noticeably high energy amongst the young musicians at Sing City sessions so far in 2017. Perhaps its the return to the freer rolling format of weekly sessions and a monthly live showcase. Maybe there’s just something in the air.

Quite a number of new faces have also come with their own unique spark, adding to the dynamic and creativity of the group, which was on display at our Sing City Live night on the 15th Feb…

There were some brilliant individual and band performances showcasing new artists, new material and some classics…

Push:Music also joined the event, with four electronic and laptop musicians from their recent residency – SGNLBZL (Traffic Mcr), Forrest Lloyd and DJ Tear Emoji (Mutalism) -performing their new material live….

The 2017 Sing City Delivery team

Sing City is facilitated by experienced composers and performing musicians James Holt, Phill Howley and Natalie McCool.

Natalie McCool is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who first came to public attention for winning a national songwriting competition judged by Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Since then she has written with Paul McCartney, performed with Boy George and collaborated with Beth Orton. Check out her top tips…

Phill Howley is a professional drummer, composer, producer and educator. Over the years he’s worked and recorded with a variety of bands and musicians, including Liz Green, Richard Barry, The Bedlam 6, Paddy Steer and most recently Manchester based ethio-trad, folk-hop band Honeyfeet. They’re performing at Band on the Wall in March…

James Holt is a Manchester singer/songwriter and former trainee practitioner at Brighter Sound. James took part in Brighter Sound’s Chaos to Order at Manchester Central Library and has performed at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Music for Youth Proms.

Now in its fourth year, Sing City offers music-making opportunities for young people to collaborate, create new music and perform across Manchester. The weekly workshops are a chance for like-minded young people to meet and develop their skills in:

  • songwriting
  • production
  • artistic collaboration
  • studio recording
  • event promotion
  • live performance

At the end of every half term we host a regular live night, giving participants the chance to showcase their work, produce an event and perform at professional music venue Band on the Wall.

Sing City is funded by Youth Music and takes place every Wednesday during term time from 6 – 8pm at Band on the Wall. For more information simply drop in to a session, contact or call 0161 830 3899.
