Have you given the Soundpaths app a go yet?
Soundpaths is a brand new mobile app that allows you to experience North Manchester in a totally different way – through music and sound.
Designed for running or walking, Soundpaths takes you on an audio journey through Moston and Harpurhey accompanied by original music and sounds which change based on your location along the route – from a sermon at St Dunstan’s Church to a gig at the Blue Bell pub.
With original music and sound by composer and producer Yonatan Collier, local artists J. Chambers, Hannah Ashcroft and Markus Hetheier, and sounds and voices collected and recorded by the people of Moston and Harpurhey, Soundpaths reflects and celebrates the area and its communities.
“A voice tells me that the community here is a strong one – neighbours get on well, they take out the bins, help with the shopping, provide care. The voice tells me that this is not the place of its past and is certainly not what the newspapers say it is. Although I’m a stranger here I can’t help but agree.”
Review by James Zatka-Haas, Disability Arts Online
Yonatan was commissioned by Brighter Sound and SICK! Festival as part of MINDSCAPES, a project that explores the impact our environment has on our mental wellbeing. You can hear more about the development of the music in this BSL interpreted discussion hosted as part of MINDSCAPES in March 2021.
The route is 5 km (3 miles) long in total. You don’t have to walk or run the whole route to enjoy this experience and you can access the soundscapes wherever you want along the route. The majority of the route is accessible, however some sections may be difficult for people with limited mobility.
Visit the Soundpaths website for everything you need to know, including online and downloadable maps, a sample of the music, and links to iOS and Android versions.
