Brighter Sound is excited to welcome the award-winning and critically acclaimed Beats & Pieces Big Band for an exclusive masterclass at Sing City.

Led by composer and conductor Ben Cottrell, Beats & Pieces Big Band are one of the most exciting ensembles of its kind anywhere in Europe. They’re an extremely tightknit bunch, meeting as students in Manchester and growing up and developing musically individually and collectively within the city’s exciting scene. First playing together as Beats & Pieces in 2008, today these fourteen musicians know each other inside out socially and musically, and this familiarity is part of what sets them aside from many other big bands today. Their unique sound embraces raw rock energy, pop melodies, dancefloor grooves and primal jazz improvisation. Its members are all highly active as bandleaders, composers, educators and orchestral and session musicians and arrangers working with some of the biggest names in pop.

On Weds 15 Nov Beats & Pieces will join Sing City for an exclusive masterclass, giving participants an insight into how they approach arrangement. After a short demo beginning at an earlier start time of 5pm, Beats & Pieces members will work with Sing City participants on their original compositions, discussing approaches to arrangement, methods of extending and reworking songs, and development of horn parts. This work will culminate in an open rehearsal and sharing opportunity where Beats & Pieces musicians will be available to act as session musicians to bring the ideas developed earlier to life. Friends and family are invited to come along and watch from 8pm.

This event is free and open to young people aged 13+.
