Manchester Experimental Orchestra

A new kind of orchestra exploring the musical identity of Manchester.

A graphically designed logo for the Manchester Experimental Orchestra. In the middle reads 'Manchester Experimental Orchestra' in yellow. The word 'Orchestra' appears in a font different to the others, more fluid or like a cloud. Around the words are various multicoloured cartoon silhouettes of people playing music in different forms. An MC, a saxophonist, a choir of gospel singers, someone at their computer, and more. Around the instruments are streams of colour to represent the sound being made from each.

What would an orchestra sound like if it was representative of everyone in the city of Manchester?

This is the question a team of talented musicians aged 12-18 explored across May-July 2022 as part of the Manchester Experimental Orchestra.

  • Bryon Wallen and two young musicians sat in a row playing a trumpet, clarinet and saxophone respectively.

  • Two young musicians smiling to the camera.

  • A side view of three young musicians sat in a row playing guitars. The one closest to the camera is smiling and looking down at sheet music on their lap.

  • A young musician sat at a drum kit smiling widely into the camera.

  • A young musician and Balraj Samrai sat behind a piano and a keyboard respectively looking down at the keys.

  • Pops Roberts looking up from writing on a desk smiling to the camera.

  • Byron Wallen sat next to a young musician smiling widely with open arms.
