Vic Meets: Performing with Mali Hayes

Explore tips and exercises to help you feel ready to get up on stage and perform, with guest artist Mali Hayes. There’ll be chances throughout to practise with your own tunes, or some of your all-time favourites.

Mali Hayes’ music is perfumed with vibrant real life stories and is coloured with honesty and soul. After various radio airplay, landing her own DJ slot on Reform Radio, numerous support slots and a collaboration with Foreign Beggars and Maverick Sabre under her belt, Mali continues to establish herself as an artist of real vision, dedication and drive.

Hosted by BBC Radio 1 presenter and R&B/Soul artist Victoria Jane, this workshop will last two hours with an hour at the end to chat, jam or freestyle. There’ll be plenty of chances to ask any burning questions throughout.

• In the early stages of your journey into music and are looking for support and guidance
• Looking to develop your skills and confidence, and have a go at something new
• Keen to meet new people and make connections in the Manchester music scene

Can I come?

This event is designed as an intentional space for women and people of marginalised genders as part of our All Things Equal initiative. This includes:

• Women, including Trans Women
• Non-Binary / Agender people
• Gender Fluid / Genderqueer people
• Trans Men / Trans Masculine people
• Intersex people

We know that more needs to be done to address intersectional barriers in the music industry, so we’re particularly keen to support additional marginalised communities. This includes Black, South Asian and ethnically diverse people, and people with lived experience of disability.

There are limited places on this workshop, so please consider whether this is right for you before signing up.

Low Four Studio is located on Deansgate Mews, accessible via escalators or a lift. The venue has step free access. Accessible toilets are 200m from the venue on Deansgate Mews.

About the artists

Mali Hayes’ music is perfumed with vibrant real life stories and is coloured with honesty and soul. Gaining experience singing backing vocals for Tito Jackson, JP Cooper, Mica Millar and more has further inspired Mali’s soulful sound. Mali hit the scene running as she joined Gilles Peterson’s Brownwood talent discovery programme Future Bubblers which saw her performing at The Jazz Cafe and also sought a slot at Gilles’ festival We Out Here. Mali went on to receive the Future Bubblers x MOBO Awards Help Musicians fund in late 2018 to further her career and development. After various radio airplay (BBC 6 Music, Gilles Peterson, Jazz FM), landing her own DJ slot on Reform Radio, numerous support slots (Bilal, Jamila Woods, Alfa Mist, Poppy Ajudha, Blue Lab Beats, Sons Of Kemet, Yazmin Lacey) and a collaboration with Foreign Beggars and Maverick Sabre under her belt, Mali continues to establish herself as an artist of real vision, dedication and drive.

Victoria Jane is a 25 year old creative all rounder. London born, Manny raised, she is the current presenter and host of Radio 1's Future Soul Show. She is also a music artist herself and has been named one of Manchester’s most exciting vocal talents to emerge from the UK R&B/Soul scene. Victoria runs ‘Vic Meets’, providing a spotlight for emerging talent. Since beginning she has hosted two sold out showcases in both Manchester and London, and organised an all-female networking event in Manchester with Nandos.
