Meet the three artists selected for Here to Remember, a commission for East and Southeast Asian artists:
- Lao-British drummer and composer Kai Chareunsy, using recorded sounds, seeks to preserve the organic feel and natural flow of live improvised music
- Hong Kong composer and performer Katherine Lee integrates Asian sonic traditions with contemporary Western practices, exploring sound as a medium for documentary, reflection, cultural identity, political, and human rights issues
- Pop musician and producer Kyami Mitsui Russell's musical sound is ever-changing but most recently could be described as experimental pop with influences of hip-hop and r&b
Curated by multidisciplinary artist and composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman (Co-Artistic Director, Manchester Collective), the three artists are spending the summer and early autumn working on new music exploring their heritage and relationship to archives and memory.
In August they met for a two-day residency at esea contemporary, chatting with each other and guest artists to help inspire their ideas. Now they’re busying away turning those ideas into reality.
You can catch the premiere of their work at SOUP on Saturday 15 November. Tickets on sale now.

"I am excited to explore how this cohort's ESEA heritages have influenced their music practices, their notion of plurality and intersectionality, and how their music (across genre) can be a vehicle for activism and archive. At a time where distraction and fragmentation are used to divide us, we need to celebrate and centre collective memories, wisdoms and stories now more than ever."
